While most of us were focused on simply surviving high school without getting shoved into a locker, Mike Shinoda, Rob Bourbon, and Brad Delson were busy building a platinum selling, Grammy® award winning band. “In The End," we all graduated, but instead of getting real jobs and selling out to the man, the boys in Linkin Park sold out the world’s biggest and baddest rock festival, Rock on the Range. If you weren’t lucky enough to snag tickets, don’t fret. Linkin Park’s killer performance will be broadcasted exclusively on AXS TV!
As we wait patiently for Linkin Park to take the stage in Columbus, take a brief walk with us through the history of, as Kerrang! puts it, the “Biggest Rock Band In the World Right Now.”
The Early Years (1996-2000): After Shinoda, Bourbon, and Delson earned their diplomas, they recruited Joe Hahn, Dave “Phoenix” Farrell, and Mark Wakefield to join them as they ventured out into the world as “Xero”. But success didn’t come quickly or easily. Tensions rose, and Wakefield left the band. However, this opened up a spot for Chester Bennington. The vocal chemistry between Bennington and Shinoda revived the struggling garage band. They were reborn as “Linkin Park” and landed their first record deal in 1999.
Breaking Through with Hybrid Theory (2000-2002): After five years of rigorous street teaming, song writing, and countless hours in the studio, Hybrid Theory was released in October of 2000. It sold 4.8 million copies in the first year and ranked as the top selling album of 2001. The breakthrough album also earned them three Grammy® nominations, one win, and the mainstream success they dreamed of from day one. They also managed to pack 320 concerts in just one year, obviously proving that they know how to put on one hell of a show and keep it going.
Reanimation, Meteora, and Teaming Up with Jay-Z (2002-2006): How did Linkin Park follow up the success of Hybrid Theory? With two more platinum selling albums: Reanimation (2002) and Meteora (2003) of course. They also embarked on international tours and sold out arenas all across the world. In 2006, Linkin Park joined forces with Jay-Z to win another Grammy® for their Rap/Sung collaboration, “Numb/Encore.” They also were able to share the Grammy® stage with legend and Beatle, Paul McCartney... no big deal.
Minutes to Midnight and Millions More in Sales (2006 - 2014): Over the next eight years, Linkin Park, dropped five more albums: Minutes to Midnight (2007), A Thousand Suns (2010), Living Things (2012), the remix album Recharged (2013), and their latest release, The Hunting Party (2014). For each album LP recorded up to fifty songs, meticulously picking and choosing the best for each release. So, you could say the guys in Linkin Park are perfectionists and from listening to the albums, we have to agree, they are perfect.
The Future of LP (2014 - Present): Linkin Park has created a legacy in the rock world since their debut album, Hybrid Theory, and have continued topping themselves with every release. They’re the first band to achieve more than one billion YouTube views, are ranked in Billboard’s Hottest Albums of the Decade, and they’ve had five consecutive releases debut at #1 on the Billboard Hot 200. Clearly, Linkin Park isn’t going anywhere… except for around the world on mind-blowing tours.
